Cihangir is one of the oldest neighborhoods of Istanbul. The story of its name comes from the period of Ottoman Empire. It has been called "Cihangir" because of Cihangir Mosque,which was built by very famous Ottoman engineer Mimar Sinan in 1559 in memory of Prince Cihangir, the son of Ottoman Sultan Kanuni, also known as Magnificent Suleyman. Cihangir is a neighborhood of well-maintained apartment buildings dating from the 1920's-1950's. Situated in the heart of Beyoglu and Taksim which is accepted as the center (downtown) of Istanbul.Cihangir, being in the heart of Istanbul, is a beautiful neighborhood of colorful bow windowed houses and quiet streets. Your neighbors will be artists, intellectuals, Turkish TV stars and foreigners. Only 5 minutes walking distance to famous Istiklal Street which runs through the historical district of Beyoglu where you can find a wide selection of restaurants, cafes, authentic & ethnic food, bars and night clubs. This district is well known with its colorful night life and entertainment, the melting pot of many visitors from around the world. Maximum 10 minutes by car (or 20 min. by walking) from historical Sultanahmet Square where you can visit world famous BLUE MOSQUE, Topkaki Palace, St. Sophia (Hagia Sofia), Yerebatan Cistern Basilica. Also 5 min. to Taksim Square where you can find several alternatives for transportation. (Metro,buses,minibuses or Taxies) !!! This is very good chance to explore Istanbul. |
